AFP-SC Brings Grassroots Voices to Capitol Hill to Oppose Federal Tax Hikes
COLUMBIA, SC — As part of a nationwide push to prevent looming federal tax hikes, Americans for Prosperity–South Carolina (AFP-SC) was in Washington, D.C. this week, bringing South Carolina voices directly to Capitol Hill. The effort is part of AFP’s broader campaign to make permanent key provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), which are set to expire.
If Congress fails to act, the average South Carolina family could see their tax bill rise by $2,199 annually—at a time when many are already struggling with rising costs. AFP-SC State Director Matt Humm and Coalitions Director Hannah Selly met with members of South Carolina’s congressional delegation to deliver a clear and urgent message: South Carolinians cannot afford a federal tax hike.
AFP-SC State Director Matt Humm made the following statement:
“Families and small businesses across South Carolina are already stretched thin by inflation and economic uncertainty. The last thing they need is a massive federal tax hike. We’re bringing the voices of our grassroots directly to Capitol Hill to ensure lawmakers understand what’s at stake—and to urge them to keep taxes low for hardworking South Carolinians.
“AFP’s Protect Prosperity campaign has mobilized Americans nationwide to urge lawmakers to stop tax hikes and support policies that expand economic opportunity.”
Background
Passed in 2017, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) lowered individual and small business tax rates, increased the standard deduction, and helped fuel economic growth. Without congressional action, many of these provisions will expire, resulting in one of the largest tax increases in American history.
Americans for Prosperity is leading a national effort to ensure the TCJA reforms are made permanent and that Americans continue to have the freedom to work, build, and thrive without government getting in the way.
AFP recently released polling that showed a majority of Americans are opposed to raising taxes.
Since the launch of AFP’s “Protect Prosperity” campaign, AFP has been a driving force in securing the permanent extension of the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act:
- Holding more than 500 events and rallies across the country with dozens of lawmakers,
- Reaching out to more than 90,000 voters in key Congressional districts over one National Day of Action,
- Hosting conversations with Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise & House Conference Chair Lisa McClain,
- Millions of dollars in ads and testimonials,
- More than 1,000 meetings with key legislators and Hill staff,
- And comprehensive polling in partnership with Public Opinion Strategies
AFP will continue to leverage its unparalleled grassroots infrastructure to show the overwhelming support for extending the Trump tax cuts and send a message to Republican lawmakers that the American people are with them and now is the time to deliver.
